Just when you feel low, something turns the balance. Thank you so much R.M. for this.

Latest review of Erosion on Amazon:

The quality of the writing sucked me in, and the carefully constructed plot kept me reading. It's always great to see a writer who has control of their material, and who understands the need to layer meaning into their work - the 'erosion' in many senses of the word. We are lucky to have had certain people in our lives and that's worth remembering and celebrating. I think there's a place for grief too though. We shouldn't deny our feelings, but we can choose which ones to concentrate on. We always learn from the people who come to our workshops and derive enjoyment from seeing the images seemingly magically appear on the screen and the pleasure people have from their creations. We agree that we could do this with so many different groups of people. On Sunday we did the workshop on the visual arts day and had our youngest participant Annabelle who was 10months old!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3879748245841748335.post-10774054177732291852011-04-22T08:57:46.209-07:002011-04-22T08:57:46.209-07:00Ouch! And I've showed you that dance he did...and how he liked Village People.
He had his moments though, like us all!
He had bronchitus when he was very young, living in London and that weakened his heart - didn't stop him being a super sportsman though. He got sent of the ice for speed skating, played rugby, tennis, would have loved to have had the opportunity to ski and later played golf with a very low handicap..Matthew can tell you what that means!
Love you and thank you. I don’t know what it’s like to not have a dad but for the days you miss him I am here to give you all my love and support. I wish I could have known your dad, because from what you have told me he sounds like he would have made an incredible grandad!
I love you and I bet he loved you very much too xxxAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18099671368032261894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3879748245841748335.post-13575034129977805722011-02-09T02:04:44.201-08:002011-02-09T02:04:44.201-08:00Thanks Ed. Yes, difficulty concentrating, disorientation and mental confusion can be caused by other things, but not for Ann.
And I have blinkers on because I'm stunned that it all came together like that. Finding out about a character helps understanding of real people. And it does all merge as characters become real people.
The caring issue: of course men and women care for others as they get older. As always, getting hold of a fact and using it to cover everyone is not how it works, but for Ann, this is specifically how it does work so she is a text book case. Inadvertently so.
Thankfully many many, maybe most people are not text book cases.Ruth Estevezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14305256793998756010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3879748245841748335.post-65899739778657362812011-02-08T09:36:36.063-08:002011-02-08T09:36:36.063-08:00Terribly sorry, but I believe that "difficult...Terribly sorry, but I believe that "difficulty concentrating, disorientation, mental confusion" are symptoms of menopause. They are also symptoms of many other things, so there we are.

Your writing point is fascinating - you can invest a character or an episode with meaning that you had not intended or recognised. This is what I believe they call a character coming alive - there's no need to scheme and plot and specify if it just flows.

On caring, the biological point may well be a real one, but many of us - men and menopausal women among us - manage to provide long-term care into our later years. It's our own fault for having big brains.Ed Wilsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17097943932544909720noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3879748245841748335.post-24006115813135704082010-08-04T08:55:54.626-07:002010-08-04T08:55:54.626-07:00Glad you enjoyed it Ruth!Glad you enjoyed it Ruth!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3879748245841748335.post-46514091172442131282010-01-22T03:28:51.191-08:002010-01-22T03:28:51.191-08:00Nice post, finding a good perfume is not a difficu...Nice post, finding a good perfume is not a difficult job, but finding a perfume in antique bottle is quite difficult.Perfume Bottleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05057198731392312478noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3879748245841748335.post-8465140305676401042009-05-22T07:29:01.894-07:002009-05-22T07:29:01.894-07:00Hi Genevieve. I checked that she wasn't having a joke with me and no, she hasn't written anything! So. Congratulations on finishing your novel. What is it about? Have a look on the Kings Hart Website and you'll see that they publish a variety of books. If they like the book, they'll publish it. "Meeting Coty" was generally deemed too short for the mainstream publishers - all seemed to quote the magic, it has to be over 80,000 words. Kings Hart are fairly new to this and are a small publisher, so they don't have the money or resources to put in to publicity, so that seems to be the only draw back for me and the books retail at a higher price, but they look good. However, they are a legitmate publisher and although they don't give you an advance, you don't pay anything! And they care about the books and will put themselves out for you. When MC was first published, I didn't make an effort re. appearances, talks etc and now I'm going to do that. The writers that do this and have a niche market seem to do best. A novel is harder because they are so many out there, but if you have something personal about you or about the book, or where you work...then that can help. They wanted film rights for the book as that was the way they thought they'd get some money back. I can tell you more about this if you want - had to negotiate the percentages, but didn't feel in a position to bargain too much as I was keen just to get the book out there. They want first refusal on the second novel, but this is normal. They also want what is best for an author, so are willing to talk about things, not that I have had to do that yet.
I can email you direct about anything further if you want to email me. Hope this helps.Ruth Estevezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14305256793998756010noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3879748245841748335.post-3527918728525220562009-05-20T06:45:09.418-07:002009-05-20T06:45:09.418-07:00Hello... Ahh! An...I wrote a comment and then it disappeared! Ahh! And can I recreate it? Do I want to? Do I have time? Now that is a whole other debate.
There must be an easier way.
I had said that I watched the Devil's Backbone last night having watched it years ago, and recently borrowed it from a friend. I had thought the ghost was threatening and frightening before, then I realised that he is trying to warn the boys of a coming danger that is knows will happen. I like films that open up the more you view them. I may be slow in this, others will have got it straight away, but I don't mind. Every viewing is unique for each of us.
And then I thought about how certain good films open with a scene from later in the film that is the crux of the film, or that sets up our response to the situation/character and then the film slowly reveals that this is false. As in the Devil's Backbone. And then other films, like Shine, which I watched on Sunday, again show a scene from later in the film at the beginning. In this case it was at the end of the struggle and before the whoosh to the end. Of course, the whole scene isn't shown, just part of it and then, when we resee it later on, it continues to reveal what the main character does and how it all ends.
I'm going back to work on Leaving Coty now (Novel) but I seem to write in a very filmic way. Does it work? Well. Let's see.Ruth Estevezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14305256793998756010noreply@blogger.com
